Unjob No.2 – Virtual Personal Assistant

July 8, 2008

Written by joey

Tired of having to wake up at 6 in the morning after a night of heavy drinking just to make it to work on time even though your boss arrives 2 hours later? Losing your hair because of stress brought about by the struggle of cueing behind an endless MRT/LRT line? With the price of oil going through the roof and the cost of everything surging along proportionately, consumer spending is predicted to decrease due to budgetary constraints and people bracing themselves for the economic repercussions of an impending US recession wrought by the recent sub-prime mortgage crisis. In a third-world Asian country reaching for first-world standards, what’s today’s computer-literate Pinoy assistant/secretary to do?

As motor traffic in the metro is predicted to divert into human traffic in the form of long lines at public transportation stations in an effort to curb travel expenses, more and more Pinoys are looking for alternatives regarding their careers. By looking for ways to stretch their monthly salaries, today’s technology driven Filipino assistants and secretaries might want to consider either relocating to a space that’s closer to their jobs, or simply working from home by telecommuting.

Although telecommuting and its management technique still hasn’t caught up in our country (as it has in other parts of the Western World), working as a Virtual Personal Assistant for both local and international clients can be a lucrative way to earn cash while staying in the glorious comfort of your favorite computer armchair. While not all VPA agencies allow you to work from your computer at home, some companies look for contractual work that allow you to get a feel for the revolutionary new way of working with someone else halfway around the world, giving you a chance to build up a portfolio of clients as well.

Becoming a VPA is the perfect unjob for experienced assistants and secretaries who are tired of all the proximate stress found within the daily grind. If you aren’t like me and consider yourself to have razor sharp memory, fantastic organizational skills and a knack for scheduling, word processing and other computer related duties, becoming a Virtual Personal Assistant might just be that cup of tea which liberates you from bundy clocks, water-cooler gossip and train struggles.
