Freelancers don’t get paid regularly. This is a universal truth for any form of freelance opportunity, and as such it’s your duty to maintain a reliable cashflow to take care of your monthly needs. If you’ve previously worked in an office, you may have experienced receiving monthly compensation without even batting an eyelash simply becuase you’re an employee. In freelancing, it’s best to think of yourself as the head of your very own business with the administrative capacity to determine how much your “company” makes each month. Basically, if you don’t get any gigs, you’re broke.
It’s a good idea to set aside some time each week to look around the net for any new writing leads/gigs that have materialized, but with the sheer amount of data being posted on the net, it’s easy to get lost in it all. Here are my top four favorite freelance writing gig sites to check out when you’re looking for some new things to work on:
1. About Freelance Writing – page dedicated to posting freelance writing, editing and translation jobs. A great place to start not only because they offer a regular listing of good freelance writing jobs floating around the net, but also because they offer some valuable tips on becoming an effective freelance writer for beginners.
2. Freelance Writing Jobs – here’s a nice WordPress blog (with a Revolution theme!) that offers leads to exciting freelance writing gigs as well as practical tips for technical writing. It’s touted as the “number 1 online community for freelance writers,” and was originally started by a mom turned blogger. A great read!
3. PoeWar – another great resource for freelance writers. PoeWar.com features comprehensive articles on technical and freelance writing as well as a separate page specifically for freelance writing gigs. Complete with funny articles to brighten up your day while working on that $2/article project.
4. ProBlogger - personally my top site for landing blogging gigs. ProBlogger features a web-based community with the intention of netting you some blog work that you’re totally interested in. Lots of tips for career bloggers, as well, such as this one.

Thank you for the link love Joey. It is much appreciated.

Joey, those are four great sites. While I have not used them for job leads, I am a reader and enjoy the communities created by these writers. All four offer support and valuable resources to the freelance writer.

@ John – I’ve always been curious about technical writing. Your site made things a lot clearer for me thanks =)
